Why previous year papers matter

A syllabus tells you what could be asked. A previous year paper shows what was actually asked, in what style and at what level. After two or three papers, three things become clear:

  • Question style. Arithmetic questions are short and formula-based, while Assam GK rewards facts you have read, not guesses.
  • Repeating areas.  Percentage, interest, number series, the Ahom period, rivers and wildlife of Assam and Fundamental Rights appear again and again in different forms.
  • Your pace. One hundred questions in 120 minutes gives you about 72 seconds per question. Only timed practice shows whether you can keep that pace.
There is no negative marking and each correct answer is worth 0.5 marks. Attempt all 100 questions and never leave an OMR bubble blank.

Selection process and marks distribution

Selection is multi-stage. Candidates first clear the Physical Efficiency Test (PET), Physical Standard Test (PST) and medical examination. Those shortlisted, in a fixed multiple of the posts per category, sit the written test, and viva-voce follows. The marks of each stage add up to the final merit score:

TypeConstable (UB) Male and FemaleConstable (AB) MaleConstable (AB) Female
PET4060 (includes Chin up event)40
Written Test505050
Viva-Voce555
Academic marks5NoneNone
Total10011595

For Constable (UB), academic marks come from the HS result: 45 to 59.99% earns 2 marks, 60 to 74.99% earns 3 marks and 75% or above earns 5 marks. For male AB candidates, the chin-up event is reported to carry 10 to 20 marks for 4 to 14 repetitions. Since the written test is half the UB total, steady study can outweigh a small gap in physical scores.

Subject-wise syllabus and preparation

Elementary arithmetic

Questions are direct and calculation-based. Cover percentage, ratio and proportion, average, simple and compound interest, profit and loss, time and work, time and distance, number system and simplification. Memorise squares up to 30, cubes up to 15 and common fraction-percentage equivalents, as they save the most time.

General English

Prepare tenses, subject-verb agreement, articles, prepositions and error spotting, plus synonyms, antonyms, one-word substitution, idioms and sentence arrangement. Read one short passage daily and note new words.

Logical Reasoning and Mental Ability

Practise number and letter series, analogy, odd one out, coding-decoding, blood relations, direction sense, ranking and simple syllogisms. These are scoring topics once you recognise the patterns, so repeat each type until you solve it in about a minute

Assam history, Geography, Polity and Economy

Study the Ahom dynasty and its administration, Lachit Barphukan and the Battle of Saraighat, the Treaty of Yandabo, the freedom movement in Assam and the Vaishnavite movement of Srimanta Sankardeva. In geography, learn the Brahmaputra and Barak valleys, tributaries, districts and headquarters, national parks, sanctuaries and major crops. For polity and economy, cover Fundamental Rights, Directive Principles, the Preamble, Parliament and State legislature, and the basics of Assam’s agriculture and industry.

GK and Current Affairs

Read the last six to twelve months of national and Assam news: schemes, appointments, awards, sports and government announcements. Keep a short monthly notebook rather than saving long articles you will never revise.
